Who would have thought there was a resort at Carey Island.
I was in search for a weekend getaway , that wasn’t too far and most importantly, child friendly. After many attempts on google search ” resorts near Klang Valley” , I found one that was also easy on the pocket .Just to clear any expectations, it ain’t no Westin , there are NO Heavenly beds here.
We set out about 11 am from Petaling Jaya and it took us about an hour – ish to get there. The last 10 km ride , was beautiful with oil palm estates on either side of the road. Always gives a sense of calmness , well, at least to me.
On arrival , we were greeted by the receptionist , who told us check-in was at 3 pm as they were running at full occupancy and required time to get our room ready. ( BOOM!!!!) Looking at my devastated face, she added that we have been upgraded to the premier room , apparently closer to the theme park and much larger. She clearly tried her best to soften the blow.
the reception – very villa style with it’s open air concept
We had booked the Deluxe family package . , so that comes with vouchers for archery, kayaking and animal kingdom entrance tickets. ( for 2 adults + 2 kids).
we paid RM 588 since it was school holidays
Since this is a very kid- friendly resort, we managed to kill 3 hours with no problems at all. First to their indoor theme park equipped with slides, swing and a little maze. Bean bags for parents to chill while keeping an eye on their offsprings.Clean and bright . Kept the kids busy till hunger struck.
bean bags to chill
Lunch was at the club house , just above the indoor play area .Service was prompt , and they were friendly, Prices slightly expensive , but I guess all hotels usually charge a little more. Food was alright , we ordered noodles , that was palatable. Sambal Udang was yummmmmms.
view from the coffeehouse
Then , came the highlight of the trip, the boat ride to Animal Island. After wearing our safety vests , we took a minute speed boat ride across to this cute little animal island. I think the boat ride adds a little extra uummmpph to this entire experience.
our speedboat to Animal Island
Once there, it really felt like a farm as the monkeys were swinging from tree to tree , goats running freely , and rabbits basking in the sun.Their caretaker was a friendly guy, gave us beans and carrots to feed the animals.Even had a little petting session with any animal of the kids choice. Even with the not so friendly looking iguana .
sugar glider was a little shy, stayed inside its little cocoon
It was 4 pm , when we finally checked in . Rooms are huge. We had a twin bed and 2 single beds. A huge bathroom that includes a bath tub ,a shower,a toilet and to top it all , another separate toilet . Two toilet bowls so we could deal with 2 pee emergencies , since they always need to pee urgently at the same time.
All rooms on this package get ground floor rooms facing the pool , and since we got upgraded , we faced the kiddy pool . That was really a bonus , as we could sit at our little courtyard while watching the kids. Kids had a ball in the pool and the slides, technically harder to coax them out of it.
our courtyard view . A lifeguard that was very on the ball , whistling away when he found kids getting a little too adventurous.
By 6 pm , kids were exhausted , so we decided on an early dinner. Drove about 10 km to Kang Guan Restaurant , that’s pretty well rated ( its pork free , just so you know). Crabs were sold out by the time we got there , place was packed and it was an hour long wait for our food to arrive. . Bad thinking , considering the kids were tired , cranky ,hungry and were practically falling asleep on the table.( Side note , order the steamed ginger fish, was so good and fresh)
Points to note, the entire resort has a fly problem . They ‘re everywhere, by the pool , at the restaurant and some, annoyingly get into the rooms . Also, tv channels are limited , so you might want to bring a DVD player or games for some adult entertainment once the kids are asleep.Alternatively , like us , we had a bottle of gin .
Breakfast starts at 7 am ( I think) . But, by the time our kids got ready , we got to Rabbit Room at 9 :30am , and that was probably the same time everybody decided on breakfast too. Food trays were near empty, no place to sit , flies lurking around. Apparently, they are not used to such crowds , hence they were having difficulties keeping up with the crowd ( since it was the first day of school holidays). If you want to have breakfast with a view and not have people stand by your table hinting for you to finish , get there by 8 am.
outdoor seating is limited , but it’s really nice. worth waking up earlier for it.
After breakfast , we went boating on a paddle boat.We paddled around for about 15 minutes , till we couldn’t take the heat any longer. Kids insisted on the Animal Island (again) and so we ventured for Round 2. The guy in the morning ( I am guessing, he is new , a foreigner and could hardly speak English/ Malay), wasn’t as obliging as the guy from the day before . He was busy cleaning , feeding and trying to avoid any contact with us .
Other paid activities at the resort include kid and adult ATV . If you’re in a big group, they organize team building activities like flying fox ,paint ball , boating , fishing ,as long as there’s a minimum of 10 pax.For a larger group, accommodations include villas with an attached pool for a more private feel .Of course , as the name suggests , there is a golf course attached.
the ATV kid track.
By 12 pm , out cold.
