Bagan

Bagan :It is Siem Reap , before the tourist boom.

Before I begin , contact Aung Zay for all your Bagan needs : aungzayoldbagan@gmail.com . His charges were about USD 80 including transport from pick up at 8:30 am till dawn.

We flew in via Air KBZ . ( for your info – I bought flights directly via their website , and eventually never received the itinery. After many failed calls / FB messenger / Instagram messages , I eventually had to call my credit card to dishonour the payment that led to me needing to cancel my credit card) . I eventually looked up Air KBZ , and I learnt they have been many , many cases such as mine , so book with caution. I eventually booked our flight via my travel agent for a sure seat on the flight!

The moment we landed , Aung Zay took care of our e-v-e-r-y need. The van was very comfortable for the three of us, with cold mineral water at all times. He spoke perfect English , answered all our questions , waited patiently for all of us and planned our itinery well so we were not “temple-d out”. He was also our bag holder , bloody amazing photographer and our own story teller.

It got gloomy after 4 pm , sunset was not possible .Point to note , for good sunset/sunrise views,  season starts from October and extends till April. That is when the hot air balloon operates as well .( Aung Zay’s brother works with the hot air balloon company , so he may give you great deals !)

our not so great sunset

We ended up at “night market street” , we were told it gets busy at nights. But it didn’t.Due to low season , restaurants close early and we were back in our room by 10 pm. We had pizzas at Sharkys , that were pretty decent with lovely cocktails .But by 9:30pm , lights slowly got dimmer and the staff all left leaving one , waiting for us to leave.

We stayed at the Ananta Bagan Hotel , that was pretty close to the ruins and night market street. Lovely quaint hotel , decent breakfast , and a pretty large balcony.

Get to Bagan before the rest of the world gets there.
